This song is inspired by the French "sex for rent" scandal and the BBC headline, "France’s sordid housing crisis."
It’s obvious that this awful practise of exploiting poor students is not limited to France - but in that country there is now a growing movement to expose it.
With verses sung by the evil landlord and the choruses sung by the entrapped student who has been forced into prostitution, "Sexy Underwear" is both passionate and sympathetic protest with more than a nod to the traditional French chanson.
NB: we have a French translation ready to record for the right artist.
- lyrics
- "Oh Joy, oh Happiness!"
Exclaims old Jean-Luc
Not Picard, the old landlord
On the Boulevard de Puke
Her valise clasped close to her heart
She climbs l'escalier
He'll have his fun, the deal is done
In an ancient Gallic way
She studied hard each day
The money that she saved
Paid for wine to take the pain away
He's not exactly gross
It's just that she has turned into a ghost
"I used to love my life
I used to wash my hair
I used to wear my sexy underwear
And when I walked the streets
My friends and I would meet
And life was innocent and fair"
"Oh Death, oh Misery!"
Exclaimed pauvre Brigitte
She's no Bardot, a young widow
Now living on the street
Jean-Luc sweats, il ne regret rien -
He plays his part
Her life is only worth the knife
He sticks into her heart
Soit tu te prostitues, soit tu finis dans la rue...
Loyer maudit, Loyer maudique
Finit sur le perepherique
"I used to love my life
I used to wash my hair
I used to wear my sexy underwear
And when I walked the streets
My friends and I would meet
Life was innocent and fair
And now I hate myself
The clothes I have to wear
Painted shadows of despair
And where my spirit goes
Dressed in these stilletos
Nobody knows nobody cares"
"Loyer maudit, Loyer maudique
Étudiant je te nique... "
